COVID-19 Government and International Response: June 11, 2021


Global COVID-19 cases have reached 175,830,873 up from 173,144,691 at 3:30 p.m. on June 4, 2021. Canada now reports 1,399,044 cases, up from 1,388,656 cases of COVID-19 on June 4. Ontario reports 538,651 cases, up from 534,675 cases on June 11, 2021. The Province reports 574 (0.1%) new cases since yesterday. Of the province’s total cases, 523,532 have been resolved (97.2%) and there have been 8,935 deaths (1.7%). The province has now completed 15,515,262 tests and reports 10,953 tests are currently under investigation. More information here.

In Ontario 10,827,420 people have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine with 1,533,742 people being fully vaccinated as of June 11, 2021. In Canada, 28,111,418 people have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. 24,164,320 people have received only one dose and 3,947,098 people are fully vaccinated.


On June 9, the Federal Government invested more than $115.1 million to protect the health, and well- being of residents in 30 municipalities across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).  Communities across Canada are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic and need immediate assistance to ensure their public infrastructure is safe and reliable. The majority of funding will support the rehabilitation of active transit infrastructure, the development of modern and accessible recreational options, and upgrades and replacement of equipment in health and emergency facilities in communities across the GTHA. On June 8, the Federal Government announced five new projects receiving funding through the Immunization Partnership Fund (IPF) to support vaccination efforts across Canada. These projects will support COVID-19 vaccine uptake among populations disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 through targeted outreach to provide culturally relevant and tailored vaccination resources. Four provincial and one national Community Health Centre (CHC) Associations will receive funding to increase COVID-19 vaccine knowledge and access for those disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 within their communities. On June 7, the Federal Government announced 20 finalists under the Vaccine Community Innovation Challenge, who will receive a $25,000 grant to develop and launch their projects to increase people’s confidence in COVID-19 vaccines and reinforce public health measures in their communities. Today, the government of Ontario invested $141 million to extend the temporary wage increase for personal support workers and direct support workers in publicly funded home and community care, long-term care, public hospitals, and social services sectors. This temporary wage increase will continue until August 23, 2021, and will help stabilize, attract and retain the workforce needed to provide a high level of care during the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 10, the government of Ontario announced that the province is further expanding eligibility for accelerated second doses in Delta hot spots to ensure a strong level of protection against COVID-19 and variants. As of June 10, 2021, the province’s public health units, mass vaccination clinics, hospital sites, pharmacies, and physicians have administered more than 10.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Ontarians. Over 73 per cent of adult Ontarians are benefitting from the protection of a first dose of vaccine, and more than 11 per cent are fully immunized. More information here.

On June 9, the government of Ontario announced they have now delivered 12.3 million rapid antigen test kits for COVID-19 to over 2,600 work sites across the province. The effort is helping businesses and other organizations keep employees and their families safe by helping keep the virus out of their workplaces. A recent success of the antigen screening program came with the involvement of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. Less than a month after the launch of its COVID-19 Rapid Screening Initiative, Ontario has shipped nearly 2.4 million kits to local chambers. These kits will help small and medium-sized businesses across the province stay safe and stay open. More information here.


Today, Mayor John Tory announced that Team Toronto has administered more than 2.5 million COVID-19 vaccine doses. Toronto is the first local health region in Canada to administer more than 2.5 million vaccine doses. More information here.

On June 10, the City of Toronto announced they will open more than 60,000 additional bookings for vaccination appointments between June 14 and July 4 at City-run immunization clinics. The additional appointments will be available to book starting Monday, June 14 at 8 a.m. More information here.

On June 10, The Toronto sprint strategy mobile and pop-up clinics are refocusing efforts to provide access to first and second vaccine doses in neighbourhoods with high incidence of COVID-19, low vaccine coverage and where the Delta variant has been identified. More information here.

On June 9, to help protect public health and reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, the Toronto City Council approved a recommendation from Toronto Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa to extend the City of Toronto’s temporary COVID-19 bylaws until the end of Council’s September 30 and October 1 meeting.
