COVID-19 Government and International Response: August 13, 2021

Global COVID-19 cases have reached 206,424,284 up from 201,898,461 at 8:30 a.m. on August 13, 2021. Canada now reports 1,447,446 cases up from 1,436,182 cases of COVID-19 on August 6. Ontario reports 553,962 cases, up from 551,338 cases on August 6, 2021. The province reports 513 (0.1%) new cases since yesterday. Of the province’s total cases, 541,862 have been resolved (97.8%) and there have been 9,412 deaths (1.7%). The province has now completed 16,787,683 tests and reports 9,372 tests are currently under investigation. More information here.

In Canada, 71.65% (27,321,538) of the population have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 62.47% (23,820,801) are full vaccinated. In Ontario 71.6% (10,591,248) people have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine with 63.9% (9,456,663) people being fully vaccinated as of August 13, 2021.

FEDERAL

Today, the Government of Canada launched a new contribution funding stream under Transport Canada’s Airport Critical Infrastructure Program. This new Biosecurity Funding Stream will provide $81.6 million to support Canada’s major airports with investments in COVID-19 testing and screening infrastructure. Government of Canada investments will also help to rebuild the public’s confidence in domestic and international travel, and ensure that Canada’s aviation industry is well positioned to recover from the impacts of the pandemic. On August 12, the governments of Canada and Ontario announced more than $114.5 million in Public Transit Infrastructure in the Durham region. The joint funding is for the construction of dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) infrastructure in the City of Pickering. Investing in public transit supports Canadians through the pandemic, positions Canada for recovery by creating good jobs and supporting Canadian companies, and transforms our society for a cleaner, better future. On August 10, the Government of Canada established a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with leading COVID-19 vaccine developer Moderna, Inc. to build a state-of-the-art mRNA vaccine production facility in Canada. Since the start of the pandemic, over $1.2 billion has been invested to rebuild Canada’s vaccines, therapeutics and biomanufacturing capacity. More information here.

On August 9, the Government of Canada announced that based on the latest public health advice from the Public Health Agency of Canada, Transport Canada is extending the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) that restricts all direct commercial and private passenger flights to Canada from India until September 21, 2021, at 23:59 EDT. On August 6, the governments of Canada and Ontario announced they are investing more than $2.1 million to protect the health and well-being of residents in 16 communities across Ontario. The joint initiative will improve access to active transportation options, including trails, pathways, bike paths, and sidewalks, in Ontario. More information here.

PROVINCIAL

On August 9, the Ontario government is investing almost $1 million to expand on-the-job training for 350 young people in creative industries like film, music, gaming and animation. The initiative is focused on youth over 16 with disabilities, who are newcomers to Ontario, Indigenous or Black. This initiative is part of the government’s effort to ensure that youth, who have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, can connect to promising careers and contribute to the strength of our economy.
